unravelling the hidden properties of whiskers

Nature produces designs with astonishing geometric complexity across length scales, achieving highly tuned performance with spatially nonuniform material properties. The closer we zoom in, the more beautiful the arrangement of matter becomes, and the more we are prompted to ask - why does it look this way?

The whiskers on an elephant’s trunk exemplify this: delicate sensing structures which expand the trunk’s sensing volume while enduring impacts and large contact loads. In a collaboration with Andrew Schultz of the Haptic Intelligence Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, I helped uncover the mysteries of the multi-dimenional material property gradients we observe along the length of these whiskers.
